A Windsor family is looking for answers, after their loved one was found dead in a hospital bathroom by staff, six hours after going missing.
It happened at Windsor Regional Hospital's Ouellette campus over the weekend. 48-year-old Clifford Ford was found dead in the hospital bathroom after he checked into the emergency room late Friday night.
Ford went into the emergency room to have a cyst removed from his head.
"They said if (it) irritated him or agitated him, to go back, and that's what he was doing, he went back to get it fixed," says Fords sister, Rayann Ford-Klein.
Ford-Klein says her brother would visit the hospital on a regular basis, after losing his left leg and right toe to diabetes.
When triage paged him at 11:40 p.m. and then again at 1 a.m. Saturday morning, Ford never answered.
"They took his file and put it to the side as if he had left the hospital," says Ford-Klein.
The hospital confirms to CTV News, that it wasn't until 5 a.m. did cleaning staff find Ford dead in the emergency room bathroom.
"How did not one person knock on that door and not want to use that bathroom, because (the) emergency is usually pretty busy there," says Ford-Klein.
Windsor Regional Hospital CEO David Musyj says both campuses will implement a thorough plan.
"We made the immediate change with respect to if a person doesn’t tell us that they've left or we didn't see them physically leaving the department, then we'll treat them as missing," says Musyj.
Hospital bathrooms are equipped with emergency buttons. Musyj says they were functioning, but were never activated. He admits more needs to be done.
"That bathroom should have been checked, from approximately 11 p.m.,” says Musyj. “We looked back at the video, (they) should've been checked between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. and it was not."
"I can't turn back a clock and look for my brother; I can't wait for him to walk through that door, because he's not coming home no more,” says Ford-Klein.
A funeral for Ford was held Tuesday.
A coroner has been called in to determine an exact cause of death.
