The new city council was faced with a tough decision in its first meeting this year – to spend, sell or outsource at Lakeview Park Marina.

Council made it clear it wants to maintain ownership of the recreational service.

“The only viable, responsible and profitable solution is to put our money where our mouths are when it comes to strengthening neighbourhoods and community assets, by making a long-term commitment to Lakeview Park Marina as a city owned and city operated marina," says councillor Irek Kusmierczyk.

The city has operated the marina since 1980.

On Monday night, a number of residents spoke in favour of maintaining the status quo.

A few councillors preferred a public-private option, where the city would own the facility and outsource its operation.

After much debate, Kusmierczyk moved that the city maintain both ownership and operation.

That motion was supported by a majority.

Now $300,000 will be re-allocated to fund numerous upgrades to the facility - including reconfigured wells, replacement of the customer service building and introducing WI-FI.
