Amherstburg councillors met to discuss recommendations to improve the municipality’s books Thursday evening.

A financial management and practices review conducted by Deloitte has offered recommendations, stating they should be implemented immediately. The review examined Amherstburg’s financial records between 2009 and early 2014 – highlighting contributing factors to the town’s estimated $40 million debt.

Council members posed questions to Deloitte regarding the 41 recommendations. The public was not permitted to ask questions.

The review will now go to administration, which is expected to return with its own recommendations for council.

Any recommendations which don’t include spending a large amount of money can be debated by the current council after Friday, Sept. 12.
