Windsor police says an alert citizen helped catch an alleged car thief.

According to police, a motor vehicle was reported stolen in the 5400 block of Reginald Street Tuesday morning. The complainant told police, she started her and walked back to the house to let the vehicle warm up, but she returned to only broken glass.

Officers say a citizen observed a man rummaging through a vehicle in a parking lot a short time later. The citizen informed mall security about the man, who then attended the lot. When security officers approached the man, police says he pulled a knife and fled the scene on foot.

Windsor police attended the scene and determined the vehicle in the parking lot to be the one reported stolen. A K9 unit was also called in to investigate. Officers say the K9 picked up a scent that lead police to an un-plated parked vehicle. Police say they located the suspect hiding within.

Upon searching the suspect, police say they located three knives, as well as a set of keys from the stolen vehicle on Reginald Street. Officers also learned the suspect had outstanding arrest warrants.

Police say they’ve charged 34-year-old Thomas Corlett with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, possession of weapons dangerous to public peace and attempted theft.
