Windsor police are warning the public about a tax refund email scam.

Police say the recipient will receive and email from an address similar to refund-tax@gc.ca with the subject line reading “Your tax refund online.”

The email state that an error has been identified with the recipient’s taxes resulting in a modest return – usually in the $500 to $700 range, but could be higher or lower. The email directs the recipient to create a Tax Gateway account in order to transfer the funds.

In the body of the email is a link that will send the recipient to a new window, where it will ask for a social insurance number and bank account.  Police say with this information fraudsters can apply for accredit in someone else’s name.

Police say Revenue Canada would never require people to submit this type of information to them online.
