A Windsor man has been found guilty of 53 child pornography-related offences.
Daniel Nickolson, 50, was in the Superior Court of Justice on Monday.
In issuing his verdict, Justice Bruce Thomas noted Nickolson was banned in 2009 from using a computer to communicate with a person under 14 years of age.
“The numbers were certainly quiet daunting and the number of convictions followed suit I suppose." Says Nickolson’s lawyer Andrew Telford-Keogh.
Nickolson was originally facing 89 counts but 18 were dismissed, 14 were stayed and four were withdrawn at the onset of the trial.
The charges against Nickolson stem from a Windsor police child exploitation unit investigation.
Windsor police started the investigation in May of 2013. On June 4, 2014 members of the Internet Child Exploitation Unit arrested Nickolson. Officers executed a search warrant on June 5, 2014 at a residence in the 2800 block of Turner Road.
He was charged with one count of possession of child pornography and one count of accessing child pornography.
Police say the investigation continued, which included examining photos, videos and chat messaging data. Between July and August 2014 an additional 21 charges were laid against Nickolson.
In August 2014, Windsor police identified a 14-year-old alleged victim, who lives in Dallas Texas. The ICE unit notified authorities in Dallas and the alleged victim was located and interviewed by police.
On April 22, 2015 an additional 63 charges were laid.
He pleaded not guilty on May 9, 2016.
Telford-Keogh is not sure how much more time his client should be behind bars.
"Given the number of charges rather the number of convictions, at this point there's a certain amount of research that needs to be done to that affect,” says Telford-Keogh.
A sentencing date has been set for Nov. 7.
