The City of Detroit has issued a warning to motorists that scam texts are circulating asking for payment for unpaid parking invoices from the city. Although the text looks like it’s coming from the City of Detroit, it is not.

Motorists can be certain that the message is a scam for the following reasons:

  • Notification of unpaid tickets will always be sent via mail
  • The web address of detroit-mi.com linked in the text is similar but incorrect, the actual website for the city is detroitmi.gov.
  • The phone number is not from the Detroit area
  • The message contains images taken from the city’s actual parking app (Park Detroit)

If you receive a scam message, delete and ignore it.

As a general rule, it’s wise to be skeptical of unsolicited communications. Remember to always protect your personal information, don’t click on links or suspicious emails, block spam numbers and report scams.
