Union Gas has big plans for Windsor Essex and Chatham Kent.
It has applied for a $265-million project for residents across the region. But it has just completed the second phase of a natural gas pipeline expansion for Leamington and Kingsville.
The second phase cost $12-million, and Union Gas says it will allow 55 more greenhouses in the region to access natural gas.
In the past, Leamington was part of an interruptible region That meant some growers lost service when natural gas usage peaked. This expansion now means greenhouses can grow year round, with no interruption.
Officials with Greenhouse Vegatable Growers say their sector contributed over $1.4 billion to the Ontario economy in 2015.
