West Region OPP have released early numbers from the annual RIDE campaign and are urging drivers to be more proactive when it comes to driving sober.
Just over two weeks after the launch of this season's Restive RIDE campaign OPP say they have encountered nearly 350 drivers who "didn't care that their ability to operate a motor vehicle was greatly hampered by their choice to drink and drive."
In the southwestern Ontario, 46 people have been charged with impaired driving or refusing to provide a breath sample and another 50 were issued a warn range suspension and lost their licence for three to 30 days.
Across the province, 184 motorists were charged with impaired or refusing to provide a breath sample and 165 were issued warn range suspensions.
OPP Commissiner Chris Lewis Tweeted Monday morning "Impaired driving is the leading 'criminal' cause of death in Canada. Just don't drink and drive and you'll have nothing to fear!"
He added "If you get behind the wheel drunk, your name may end up in the media...either because you're charged or because you have been killed."
Police are reminding drivers to find alternative options after a night of drinking, including handing over the keys before the event, having a designated driver, taking a cab or limo and taking the bus or other public transportation.
The campaign continues until January 2.
