It appears a new Catholic school in east Windsor will not open in time for the new school year.
Ontario Education Minister Mitzie Hunter learned the news as she toured the construction site for St. Teresa of Calcutta Elementary School on Meldrum Road on Thursday.
The new facility will house 550 JK to Grade 6 students from St. Jules, St. Bernard and Our Lady of Lourdes as the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board consolidates facilities. Grade 7 and 8 students from the three schools will go to Corpus Christi School.
The cost to build the new school is nearly $8-million, but the Minister says consolidation saves money and allows funding to be directed into the classroom.
Board spokesperson Stephen Fields admits the project is behind schedule.
“We were anticipating it would be open for September 1, but we have had some delays with weather-related circumstances,” says Fields.
Fields tells CTV Windsor the hope is the new school will be ready for October 1.
Minister Hunter also spoke to students at Dr. David Suzuki Public School on Thursday, before announcing more than $3-million in funding for ten companies in Windsor-Essex for job creation and innovation.
