He became the first man to film a music video in space, now Col. Chris Hadfield is looking to take his music career to the next level with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.
Hadfield became a worldwide sensation when he played his rendition of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” from the International Space Station in 2013. But for the first time on Earth, Hadfield will be debuting songs he wrote while orbiting far above the blue planet, here in the Rose City.
"This is his first ever full performance with a symphony orchestra, of the songs that he wrote while in the space station,” says WSO conductor Robert Franz. “It's really special."
Franz previously trained Hadfield’s wife to conduct the orchestra via Skype, specifically for the colonel’s performance this weekend. Franz says it’s his mission to provide support to the musicians surrounding him, including Hadfield, to help make them the best they can be.
“To be at their best, to play at their best, to be better than even they thought was possible," he says.
Starting Friday, Windsor’s Capital Theatre will act as Hadfield’s ground control. In total, the former astronaut will play four concerts with the WSO in front of a sold out crowd.
"Should be a really fun set of concerts and I'm looking forward to Windsor being just the first of many across the country," Hadfield says.
