Windsor police and fire officials continue to investigate a weekend blaze that critically injured a seven-year-old girl.
Kenneth Kormendy, 43, believed to be an ex-boyfriend of the girl’s mom, has been charged with three counts of arson endangering life , three counts of attempted murder and two counts of arson causing injury.
The fire broke out at 1680 Balfour Blvd. around 11:45 p.m. Saturday night, sending the mother and young daughter to hospital. An 11-month-old girl was also inside the home, but was unharmed.
"Officers arrived and they found a female with a young seven-year-old girl, her daughter on the front lawn," says Const. Andrew Drouillard.
The Ontario Fire Marshal's office and Windsor police are sifting through burnt debris as the investigation continues.
The girl is in hospital fighting for her life. Police say she has serious burns to her face, torso, hands and feet.
"The information that we have right now on the seven year old is she was air lifted to London hospital and today she's in critical, but stable condition," says Drouillard.
The girl's mother had serious burns to one of her hands and will require further treatment.
Police confirmed that Kormendy was recently in a brief relationship with the mother, but that it had ended.
"They were in a short term relationship that had ended and that these children aren't his biological children,” says Drouillard. “Definitely a very serious incident that took place there and residents there were very shook up by it."
