Windsor police will be cracking down on distracted driving this month.

Officers will be specifically looking for the use of handheld devices while driving.

The fine for distracted driving is $125, plus a court surcharge. It is not a requirement that the police prove that the device was in operation.

"If you have a telephone, cellphone in your hand and police see you, you can be pulled over and issued a ticket for distracted driving," says Windsor police Sgt. Matt D’Asti.

Police say distracted driving, particularly the use of cellphones while driving, is the most dangerous traffic problem facing the public and police today. The number of serious accidents attributed to distracted driving has exceeded those caused by drinking and driving offences in Ontario.
