Opposition is growing in Windsor over a plan by a Detroit refinery to increase emissions of certain pollutants.

Sulphur Dioxide is one of the pollutants that would be increased by the Marathon Petroleum Corporation, owners the refinery west of Zug Island.

The Windsor-Essex County Environment Committee is recommending that a joint city-county letter be sent in opposition to the plan.

Committee member Derek Coronado has said that the move may go against the Canada-US Air Quality Agreement.

The company recently applied to the Michigan Department of Environment Quality for permission.
