Windsor police are warning the public after a complaint about door-to-door salespeople asking to inspect the furnace or water heater.

Police say the salesperson typically tells the homeowner they need to enter the home to see the energy systems. Then they use various sales tactics to secure an agreement.

The salespeople represent a private company and are not affiliated with the Ontario Energy Board.

The Ontario Energy Board does not solicit door-to-door. They are a regulatory body under the Ministry of Energy for the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Energy Board can be contacted at 1-888-632-6273.

Police are reminding homeowners they are under no obligation to allow a door-to-door salesperson into their residence. They say do not share personal information unless you are sure you want to sign a contract.

More information on door-to-door sales can be found on the Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services website.
