Police services across the globe will be ‘all thumbs’ on Friday, but in a good way.

The inaugural 24-hour global police tweet-a-thon will have officers giving each community a glimpse into their day-to-day activity.

Windsor and Chatham-Kent police services will be joining over 200 agencies in the initiative.

Agencies will tweet using the same hashtag, #poltwt, to create awareness about police work and issues police face as well as to promote the use of social media in policing.

"We are excited to bring together police agencies around the world in this first of its kind social media event," said Lauri Stevens, organizer of the global event. “We hope it sends the message to non-law enforcement that their police officers are up to speed with social media, and that they should use the channel to talk with police officers and to be stewards of public safety."

Windsor police are planning a virtual ride-along with officers. From about 10 a.m. until 12p.m., Sgt Matthew D’Asti will be tweeting along with the forensic identification unit. Sgt Mizuno will be tweeting with patrol officers working the downtown area from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Chatham-Kent police are also planning a virtual ride-along from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Law enforcement agencies in the U.S., Canada, UK, Sweden, Iceland, and Australia are participating.
