Windsor police are launching a month-long campaign to crack down on distracted drivers.

Operation Stay Focused is a Windsor police initiative developed in response to a growing trend among motorists to multi-task while driving.

Police say drivers who are distracted are not fully concentrating on the road and are therefore crating a dangerous driving situation.  Driving while distracted is a leading cause of motor vehicle collisions.

Drivers who are engaged in the following distractions are more likely to be in a crash or near crash event compared with non-distracted drivers:

-Text messaging on a cell phone - 23 times more likely

- Reaching for a dropped object - nine times more likely

- Talking on a cell phone - four to five times more likely

- Reading - three times more likely

- Applying makeup - three times more likely

- Dialing on a hand held device - three times more likely

Officers hope the campaign will raise awareness and reduce collisions related to driving distracted. The initiative runs May 1-31.
