The provincial government is expanding natural gas access in underserved areas to lower prices, help businesses and create jobs.

Economic development minister Brad Duguid was in Essex County Friday to announce the $200 million Natural Gas Access Loan and the $30 million Natural Gas Economic Development Grant.

Officials say it will attract new industry, make commercial transportation and agriculture more affordable, help to create jobs, provide more energy choices and lower electricity prices for businesses and consumers across Ontario.

""We know that expanded access to natural gas is important to families and businesses in communities across Ontario," says Duguid.

In the coming year, the province hopes to reach out to communities to seek input on the design of the natural gas programs and will encourage communities to partner with utilities to bring forward expansion plans.

The Ontario Energy Board is accepting proposals for natural gas expansion projects. Applicants are invited to identify options that would address any regulatory impediments and the board will consider these options as part of its review.
