Windsor police say an elderly man was scammed out of $4,000 by a person claiming to be a local sergeant.

Officers went to the home of the 74-year-old on Wednesday for a reporter fraud.

The victim told police that he received a phone call on Tuesday from a man claiming to be a Windsor police sergeant.

Police say the caller told the victim that his son had been involved in a car crash in the Dominican Republic.

The caller told the victim to wire funds to an insurance representative in the Dominican in order to avoid criminal charges against his son.  After receiving instructions, the victim sent a MoneyGram for nearly $4000.

Police say the caller phoned the victim again, claiming that there were some complications. He warned the victim that he couldn't speak to anyone about the transaction, not even his son.  The victim found this suspicious and contacted his son and learned that he was scammed.

Officers are warning the community about the incident, saying there is at least one other potential victim receiving a similar phone call.
