It was a long night for Windsor City Council after hearing from at least 30 delegates before making a final decision on a hospital levy.
In the end Council voted to implement a one per cent hospital tax levy from 2016-2029. The average household will see an increase of $30 per year.
The levy will help pay for the City’s portion of the proposed mega hospital at County Road 42 and Concession 9.
The expectation is that the province would pay 90 per cent of the roughly $2-billion project leaving Windsor and Essex County to come up with the remaining $200-million.
Last week Essex County Council approved a 0.5 per cent levy over the next 20 years.
Windsor’s levy means the eight year streak of no tax increases will come to an end.
During the meeting many delegates still showed concern over the location of hospital, and some argued there are too many unanswered questions due to a lack of public consultation.
In the end the one per cent levy was approved over the 2.19 per cent levy originally proposed.
