A collision involving two tractor-trailers on the eastbound Highway 401, west of Provincial Road, closed down the roadway Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. and caused significant damage to the transport trucks, but only minor injuries, according to the Tecumseh Fire Department.

One of the trucks rear-ended the other, spilling its contents of vegetables and sand all over the highway.

The other truck sprung a fuel leak, with about 100 litres of diesel spilling onto the road.

Officials say it reached the catch basin, but responders were able to erect a dyke around the spill to avoid storm sewer contamination.

"A very big mess, a very big mess. But no one was hurt. A little inconvenience for a lot of truck drivers, but fortunately I think they rerouted all that truck traffic on the roundabout, and they were able to go down Walker Road to the 401 to continue on," says Mike Tait of Tecumseh Rescue and Fire.
