Statistics Canada has released corrected July jobs numbers that show the economy actually gained nearly 42,000 jobs last month -- well above the paltry 200 jobs the agency incorrectly reported a week ago.

Locally, Windsor’s unemployment numbers weren’t as positive as first reported. Earlier this month, Stats Canada stated as 8.5 per cent, but a review shows it to be slightly higher at 8.7 per cent in the month of July.

The agency says the error resulted from a major redesign of its market-moving Labour Force Survey that occurs every 10 years when one program was not updated, which it calls a human error.

The mistake resulted in Statistics Canada overestimating full-time job losses.

The number of full-time job losses is now 18,000 instead of the 60,000 figure reported last week.

The number of part-time gains remains unchanged at about 60,000.

Canada's unemployment rate also remains unchanged at 7.0 per cent in July, from 7.1 per cent the previous month.
