Windsor police officers are commending the actions of a bystander who reached into a car and took the keys from a driver following a series of fender benders with other cars near the downtown area.
Leo Lalonde notified police after seeing a suspected impaired driver who swerved onto sidewalks, and went down the wrong way on a one way street before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Lalonde was on Erie Street when he says he saw the erratic motorist swerving and smashing into parked cars.
"I then thought to myself, well Leo pull a UTurn and stop this guy, something's not right here," says Lalonde.
Lalonde says he then blocked the intersection, preventing the man from driving any further.
"The guy appeared to be incoherent, his eyes were glassy, he was slouching over the wheel," he says.
A scuffle ensued with Lalonde trying to grab the keys out of the ignition.
"I still had a grip on the key,” says Lalonde. "I turned the key the rest of the way, pulled it out of the car and threw the keys on the roof until police arrived."
Officers say the suspect at first resisted arrest, but eventually he was taken into custody.
Terrance Jessome, 57, from Florence, Nova Scotia allegedly blew four times over the legal limit and is facing a number of charges including dangerous driving.
Police say the same suspect vehicle matched the description of a car which struck four parked vehicles, causing about $2000 to a parked car in one incident.
