Windsor veterans and their supporters are trying to stop the closure of the local Veterans Affairs office.
The Windsor office is slated to close in February, 2014. People opposing the closure attended a town hall meeting at the Royal Canadian Legion in Windsor Thursday morning to discuss the impact.
Public Service Alliance of Canada representatives say it will leave over 2,600 veterans in the area in a very difficult position. They will now have to travel two hours to the next closest office, which is in London.
Rob Boots, who spent 12 years in the navy reserve, is a third generation veteran. He says he's disgusted by the Canadian government's decision to close the Windsor location.
“Reconsider this decision,” says Boots. “The dollars you are saving are miniscule compared to the services that are being provided to our veterans."
Aside from Windsor, the federal government is shutting down eight other Veterans Affairs offices across Canada.
Canadian veterans have launched a national campaign to protest the closures. It includes a three-and-a-half minute YouTube video featuring a number of Canadian veterans and front-line support workers.
