The Municipality of Lakeshore has made the decision to stop its annual dog tag program, effective as of Jan. 1.

The municipality ensures this applies to the municipal dog tag, however owners must still make sure their dogs can be identified, whether through a dog tag with updated contact information or a microchip.

“By ending our dog tag program, we’ve simplified the process for dog owners and reduced administrative costs for our taxpayers,” said Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey.

“While a municipal dog tag is no longer required, it is still crucial that all dog owners ensure their pets have up-to-date identification.”

Lakeshore said this decision was made as microchip technology and social media have improved, taking away the need for traditional dog tags for lost dogs.

If you need a dog tag for your pet, you can get one at any pet store or online. These must have your dog’s name and a phone number to call if they get loose. Microchips can also be given to your pet at your vet’s office or the Windsor-Essex County Humane Society.
