It's an alternative approach to pet medicine.
Cannabis based products for cats and dogs are being sold in the United States and are growing in popularity in Canada.
Dr. Janice Huntingford took a course on medical marijuana and hemp products in the spring. She is now prescribing hemp oil at the Essex Animal Hospital.
"It does have some cannabis in it and that is the effective ingredient that we use to treat pain, seizures, and cancers in pets," says Dr. Huntingford.
Dr. Huntingford has a couple of hemp oil bottles in her office. She says the products typically sell for about $120 for a 25 millitre bottle.
