A deer has been rescued after being trapped in a backyard in Tecumseh.
The deer was running southbound on Wedgewood Lane when it got stuck in the backyard of one of the houses in the 200 block.
One of neighbours saw the animal in trouble and called OPP.
Witnesses say the deer was caught in garden netting and fell on a covered pool. It was able to free itself from the pool, but couldn't get out of the backyard.
Tecumseh firefighter responded to assist with the rescue.
They were able to calm the animal and get it into the back of a pickup truck. It was released at a conservation area at Concession Road 12 and Baseline.
Prior to the rescue, Deputy Fire Chief Art Lounsbury says he contacted several animal control organizations to tranquilize the animal, but no one would assist them.
"The answer was leave the door open and let it go,” says Lounsbury. “We tried to explain we are in the middle of town we can't just let a deer run free on the streets."
But Melanie Coulter of the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society says that's exactly what should have been done.
"Unless there is a real emergency where there is a threat to themselves or a threat to traffic, running down a busy road, it's best to give them their space and let them find their way out on their own," says Coulter.
Lounsbury says the deer was not hurt during the incident.
"The deer has some scratches from running into fences but when it got out to the bush it looked very very happy," says Lounsbury.
