The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board voted Tuesday night on recommendations from an accommodation review study that will see the closure of some schools.
The board has decided that after this school year, St. John Catholic Elementary School in west Windsor will close.
It will consolidate with St. James and become a school for JK’s to grade 6.
The board will also ask the province to fund an addition and renovations to the St. James site and Assumption high school.
The plan is that assumption will offer middle school programing for Grade 7 and Grade 8 from both St. John and St. James.
The Grade 7 and Grade 8 classes will begin attending Assumption this September, although planning will have to take place to accommodate gym time, because the current gym schedule is full.
Some parents were calling for all grades from St. John to move to Assumption and have the board move to a different space.
Board officials say they have a plan in place for student transportation.
The board will also close St. Bernard Elementary School in Amherstburg. The plan is that all students will move to the Stella Marais site.
That transition will begin this September.
There will also be changes coming to Leamington schools.
Eventually Queen of Peace school will close.
Most students will move to St. Louis Catholic Elementary School, which will become a JK to Grade 6 school.
A middle school will be created for Grades 7 and Grade 8 classes from both St. James and Queen of Peace.
The students will stay at Queen of Peace until the middle school can be relocated to cardinal carter secondary school.
