An animal rights organization is rewarding a Windsor dog for helping save an elderly man who was having a heart attack.

PETA is giving Rob Sheardown’s dog Bella a heroic dog reward after she drew attention to an elderly man who was having a heart attack in her owner’s apartment building on Nov. 30.

Sheardown says Bella refused to get in the elevator and dragged him at full speed to the elderly man, who was in distress behind one of the couches in the lobby. As Sheardown called 911, Bella went down next to the man and kept her paw on his arm until the paramedics arrived.

"As Bella demonstrated by leaps and bounds, dogs are intelligent and sensitive beings capable of just as much kindness to strangers as humans are," said PETA senior vice president Daphna Nachminovitch in a release. "Shelters are overflowing with lovable dogs just like Bella.”

PETA is sending Bella a framed certificate and a "doggie" bag with an eco-friendly squeaky toy, a Nylabone, a comfortable harness, and a box of vegan dog treats.

Nachminovitch says PETA hopes Bella’s clever and loving act will inspire other people to adopt from shelters.

Sheardown adopted Bella from the Windsor Essex Humane Society in July.
