Ontario Provincial police would like to remind boaters to stay safe and stay sober during the lond weekend.
The OPP is joining the nation campaing Operation Dry Water which aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by impaired operation of boats and other watercraft.
OPP marine units will patrol lakes and rivers to make sure boaters are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In a release the OPP says operating a boat in Ontario while impaired carries the same consequences as driving a vehicle while impaired. Police warn that impaired boat operators face criminal charges and will also have their driving privileges for motor vehicles suspended.
The OPP is also promoting safe operating practices by encouraging the wearing of personal floatation devices, particularly for paddlers and small craft operators, as many fatal boating incidents over the years have involved small motorized vessels as well as canoes and kayaks.
