With the temperature continue to rise throughout the region, OPP is reminding residents to be careful while utilizing frozen waterways.

In a release, OPP says people should be extra cautious when venturing onto frozen rivers and lakes as temperatures rise.

Officials say ice does not freeze at a uniform rate across most bodies of water. Near-shore ice is often much thicker, than ice further out. OPP is asking fishermen to check thickness regularly with a spud bar or auger.

Police say clear blue ice is the strongest to look for.

Snowmobiling can be even more dangerous if the proper measures aren’t taken. OPP says to ensure safety; at least 20 cm of clear blue ice should be visible.

Above all else, officials say informing someone of your whereabouts could drastically change the landscape if something were to go wrong.
