MONTREAL - Luka Rocco Magnotta has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the killing and dismemberment of Jun Lin in May 2012.
Magnotta was found guilty today of first-degree murder and four other charges: criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Parliament; mailing obscene and indecent material; committing an indignity to a body; and publishing obscene materials.
On the four non-murder charges, Magnotta was given the maximum sentences allowed under the Criminal Code, ranging from two to 10 years.
The Crown had sought the maximum, while the defence left it to the judge's discretion.
Magnotta did not testify at the trial and had nothing to say as Quebec Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer prepared to sentence him.
The verdicts came down on the eighth day of jury deliberations at the Montreal courthouse.
Magnotta was charged with first-degree murder in Lin's death but Cournoyer gave jurors the option of finding him guilty of second-degree murder or manslaughter.
The accused admitted to the killing but pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
His lawyer urged the jury to find Magnotta not criminally responsible after arguing he is schizophrenic and didn't know what he was doing when he killed Lin.
