It’s back. The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has announced the first confirmed case of the flu in the region.

The health unit is reminding everyone that the best way to protect against the influenza virus and lower your risk of flu is to get the vaccine.

“Cases of flu may occur as early as October and as late as April,” says Lora Piccinin, manager of infectious disease prevention. “It is highly recommended to get the flu vaccine before flu season starts to help minimize the spread, although the vaccine can still be given up until the end of the season.”

Beginning Monday, Oct. 24, the seasonal influenza vaccine will be available to the public.

The flu vaccine is free from your primary health care provider, participating pharmacies, walk-in clinics and at community clinics run by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.  People who work, live or study in Ontario are eligible to receive the flu vaccine each year.

More information is available on the health unit’s flu page.
