A 60-year old, three-story building in the heart of downtown Essex is no more as of Sunday afternoon.

"It's a demolition. how exciting is that. this doesn't happen every day," said one excited on-looker.

The move comes after town council decided to demolish the building after a large piece of stucco had fallen on the property next door a few weeks ago, causing safety concerns.

Bob Weldon has lived in Essex his entire life. He remembers the building being built at 49 Talbot Street North.

"We've been here with our friends for a couple hours now. We've been enjoying this. It's very unusual," he said

Two adjoining businesses will remain closed until work is complete.

Many in the community are giving their input as to what should take its place.

"A parkette will be a nice idea with some benches so people can come outside in the nice weather," said one resident.

"Maybe parking," chimed in another.

"I'm thinking a park would be fantastic," said a woman.
