A 22-year-old man is facing charges after a motorcyclist died in a crash on E.C. Row Expressway.
Windsor police were called to the area of E.C. Row at Jefferson at 10:55 p.m. on Tuesday for a report of an accident involving a motorcycle and a car.
When police arrived they saw a 66-year-old Amherstburg man lying on the roadway. A citizen was tending to the victim performing chest compressions.
The citizen told police that the victim did not have a pulse. EMS arrived at the scene and determined that the man was deceased.
"He sustained his injuries which ultimately led to his death," Sgt. Matt D’Asti.
Police saw a heavily damaged 2006 Honda motorcycle and a heavily damaged 2007 Infinity that were involved in the collision. Officers found several witnesses at the scene as well as the driver of the Infinity.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that both vehicles were travelling on EC Row Expressway in the Westbound curb lane approaching the Jefferson overpass.
Police say the 2007 Infinity struck the motorcycle from behind, causing the victim to be thrown from the vehicle.
The 22-year-old driver of the Infinity was arrested at the scene and appeared in court Wednesday. He is facing charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and criminal negligence causing death.
Police say they received information that indicates that the suspect may have been driving distracted at the time of the impact. Police are also investigating whether or not alcohol was a factor.
"We have some evidence to suggest that this driver may have been driving distracted," says D’Asti.
D'Asti is reminding the public distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents, including fatal collisions, on the roadways.
"A lot of people think they have the ability to multi-task,” says D’Asti. “It's simply imperative that we pay attention to what we are doing when we are being the wheel to avoid tragedy.”
E.C. Row Expressway was closed for almost 17 hours while collision reconstruction specialists conducted their investigation.
Police are asking any additional witnesses to call.
