There may be a new way to get rid of large, unwanted items in Windsor.

City councillor Irek Kusmierczyk wants the city to host a big bin day, a chance for residents to donate their unwanted furniture for free.

It’s similar to an idea in Edmonton – where residents can donate unwanted furniture for free, once a month.

Currently, there is a $5 flat fee for Windsor residents to get rid of their old furniture.

The proposal would cost the city $15,000, and the issue will come to council on Monday.

Kusmierczyk feels it’s well worth the money to stop residents from abandoning old loveseats and chairs.

Kusmierczyk notes it would also be a win-win for charity organizations, like the Furniture Bank.

Manager Dave Locke says they need more furniture for residents in need, who are referred to them by social services agencies.

He admits furniture “goes out faster than we can get it in.”

If you have unwanted items, you can arrange to drop it off at the Marion Avenue warehouse.

You can also call the Furniture Bank at (519) 890-4353 for a pickup on Saturday for a small fee.
