An Amherstburg cyclist has hired a lawyer after his leg had to be amputated following a crash with a minivan.

Ricky Orum was biking to work on Alma Street in Amberstburg at 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 30, when he was hit from behind by an eastbound minivan, close to Concession 4 South.

He’s retained Windsor lawyer Jennifer Bezaire, a partner at Greg Monforton & Partners.

“Ricky suffered devastating injuries including multiple fractures to his cervical and thoracic spine,” said Bezaire in a release. “Sadly, his most severe injury is a horribly fractured left leg. Surgeons tried to save his leg but Ricky lost that battle and the leg was amputated in a London hospital last week.”

She says Orum and his family are devastated, especially because he was “so careful that day to ensure he was seen from behind as he rode his bike to work.”

Orum and his family are asking the public for help. He travelled the same route to work every day and they are looking for anyone who may have seen Orum riding his bike in the dark.

Possible witnesses can call Bezaire at (519) 258-6490.
