Windsor police are investigating a number of cases where alleged fraudsters are calling residents, claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and asking for personal information.

One local senior got a call like this that lasted close to half an hour and afterward she called police.

Rebecca Connor was running errands Friday when she noticed a missed call on her cell phone from an unfamiliar number. She called it back.

"A gentleman came on and said he was with the CRA and that I had defrauded my income tax."

The fake CRA employee said she could be arrested and that one of his agents was already calling the police. That's when Connor started to worry.

"I got really panicky because I didn't understand why they were calling."

After asking questions the person couldn't answer, she put the phone down. She could hear activity in the background and that's when she became suspicious.

"One of the questions I asked was what address they had for me and they said they couldn't give out that information."

After speaking with the man for about 25 minutes, she called police.

Const. Rob Durling says they are aware of this scam. He says people pose as CRA employees and try to gain the trust of the target by mentioning something specific about their income tax situation.

Durling says phone calls aren't the only way these people try to scam taxpayers. "I’ve seen it by e-mail and usually the e-mail will come in some type of letter form."

Durling says if the CRA does have to contact you, it won't be through phone calls or e-mails. "They will issue a registered letter to whoever the taxpayer is."

And if you receive a call similar to the one Connor had, she has some advice.

Since Friday, she has received another phone call from the same number, but this time she let it go to voicemail. The message was the same pitch she received Friday night.

Durling also noted taxpayers can check on calls like this themselves. If someone calls and claims to be from the CRA and you don't believe them, hang up and call the agency yourself and find out about your income tax situation.
