A Windsor police officer is pleased with a recommendation to double fines for drivers speeding in city construction zones.

The transportation committee approved a recommendation that construction sites within the city limits be designated as roadway construction zones under the Highway Traffic Act. The change means the fines would be doubled for speeding and dangerous driving in those sites.

Windsor police Const. Mark Kloppenburg says it will help make the areas safer.

“Increased fines will definitely deter speed in construction zones,” says Kloppenburg. “There's a lot of high speeds coming through construction zones.”

He says some areas are worse than others.

"On Walker (Road) right now, workers are just inches off the road, and when you see people flying by at the speeds they do, it's definitely a concern for the city," he says.

He says he has ticketed drivers for going more than 40 to 50 kilometres over the limit in construction zones..

"When you see people coming through at those speeds, it's definitely a concern and people need to know what the repercussions are,” says Kloppenburg.

He says a combination of enforcement, signs and increased fines will deter people and will make a difference.

"The signs alone aren't enough."

The recommendation still has to be approved by Windsor city council.
