A horse that appeared malnourished and has been at the centre of allegations of animal cruelty has been returned to its caretaker.

The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society has returned the horse named "Lovey"  on Friday, after the caretakers met all of the necessary conditions.

The horse was seized Thursday from a property at County Road 42.

The caretakers have maintained they have done nothing wrong and say that the 29-year-old horse is just getting old.

The Humane Society says once the conditions are met, they have no choice but to return the animal.

But Executive Director Melanie Coulter says they will continue to follow-up the file.

A protest was held Friday that called on the Humane Society to seize more animals from the property.
