A new project for Windsor's downtown will be announced on Wednesday.

The Downtown Residents Association (DRA) and the Downtown Windsor Community Collaborative (DWCC) will unveil their Downtown Neighbourhoods Project at the meeting for all downtown residents.

It will take place Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the YMCA at 500 Victoria Street.

Both parties say recent concerns about how to improve downtown Windsor have spurred a need to connect residents to move forward and advocate together. The meeting aims to give residents a platform, and connect them with relevant resources so they can be heard, a news release says.

There will be several community stakeholders attending such as Windsor police and the Windsor Essex Community Health Centre, to share information and to address resident concerns.

The new project will launch with a resident roundtable and endeavors to engage community leaders. The Downtown Neighbourhoods Project envisions a place where people can feel part of their community and be proud of where they live.

One of the issues expected to be discussed is the drug and opioid problem in the city, and whether safe injection sites are a good idea.

“Our partners with the Windsor Essex Community Health Centre are going to be talking a little bit about opioids so we can just get some more fact-based information,” says DWCC Volunteer Coordinator Emily Schurter. “So we can educate ourselves about what can we do individually, what can we do as a neighbourhood.”
