The cause of a fire in Chatham-Kent Sunday has been ruled accidental after two barns used for curing tobacco went up in flames.
Officials say the fire caused roughly $300,000 in damages; however $360,000 in property were saved when firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to additional barns nearby.
The fire started around 1:30 p.m. at a farm on Erieau Road. The blaze began at a barn on the windward side of the property and quickly spread to an adjacent barn.
The cause was ruled accidental as a result of normal farming operations mixed with unusual climate conditions within the barns used for curing tobacco.
No injuries or loss of livestock were reported.
