An archaeological dig in Essex County is leaving taxpayers on the hook for more than $1million.

Essex Warden Tom Bain tells CTV News, Essex County council sought provincial funding to help with the cost of the dig. Council was told by the province that no funding programs are in place for this type of project.

Artifacts dating back thousands of years were uncovered when work on the Puce River, County Road 22 Bridge started last year. Up to 100,000 objects were uncovered during the dig, giving a glimpse back into Essex County history.

The dig wrapped on Sept. 30. Several of the items uncovered include pottery, arrowheads, wild boar tusks and axe pieces. Some things from other regions were found, including the Caribbean.

Bain says the money for the project will be included in the 2014 budget.
