Cross-border commuters take note – the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel will be closed on weeknights starting this fall.

In order to work on the tunnel ceiling project, the border crossing will closed on weeknights for eight months, according to the Windsor city council agenda.

The tunnel will be closed from Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. from November 20 until June 4.  There will also be four weekend closures, from Nov. 18 until Dec. 9.

The tunnel’s engineering consultant conducted an in-depth inspection of the river section exhaust duct  ceiling slab and recommended a full removal and replacement of 4,000 linear feet of ceiling.

The ceiling slab is over 85 years old.

It is expected to cost $17 million. WDTC’s share of the cost is 50 per cent of the cost of the ceiling replacement and 100 per cent of the portal beam replacement.
