Emotions were high and tempers flared last night at a rally outside of Jeff Watson's campaign office in Essex.

The conservative candidate is denouncing the behaviour of some of the protesters.

Watson attended the rally to answer questions, but he says some of the female campaign volunteers were verbally abused, had drinks thrown at them and were threatened.

“One Unifor-NDP member referred to one of my female campaign volunteers as a "f*cking c*nt," said Watson on his Facebook page. “Another Unifor-NDP member called one of my other female campaign volunteers a "dirty fat cow."

Watson went on to say “Someone came to the election event with vodka and threw her drink on another one of my female volunteers. And another threatened violence to one of my volunteers, thank goodness we have the video of that one.”

Protesters were upset over the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Watson is calling the behaviour unacceptable.

“This is the real face of Unifor, the culture in which Essex NDP candidate Tracey Ramsey is steeped,” said Watson. “We'll see if Ms. Ramsey's feminism includes denouncing her Unifor peers and decrying such abuse of Conservative women on my campaign."

Ramsey issued a statement on Thursday:

“This was not an NDP event – and Mr. Watson knows that. My campaign team and I were not involved in this event.

Mr. Watson is intentionally misleading the voters of Essex in order to distract us from the important issues of this campaign. I call on Mr. Watson to do the honourable thing, immediately remove comments and pictures which he has associated with the NDP and apologize to Essex voters for misleading them.

People in Essex deserve a Member of Parliament that fights to bring jobs back to the community. After ten years of Harper’s government, we’ve lost good manufacturing jobs. Families are working harder but can’t get ahead. Mr. Watson and Mr. Harper have failed to deliver for Essex – and they now want to distract us from their record.

This is why more and more people want change in Ottawa. This is why I’m proud to stand with Tom Mulcair – a strong and experienced leader who will fight for good manufacturing jobs in Essex.”
