Windsor police are warning the public about a new phone scam where the caller poses as a police officer or an agent with the Canadian Revenue Agency.

In each occurrence, police say the victim receives a phone call and is informed that an “audit” of their taxes has been performed and that they owe the government money. The caller then tells the victim that they will be arrested within hours unless the funds are paid back immediately.

The caller then tells the victim to purchase Visa gift cards in the amount owing, all while remaining on the phone. Once the cards are purchased, the victim is instructed to provide the number codes on the card.

Anyone who receives a call like this is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
