With faculty at the University of Windsor still without a negotiated contract, the union has decided to head to the picket line, but it won’t be for long.
In a news release issued Friday morning, the Windsor University Faculty Association has approved a one-day strike on Sept. 15. The union says the goal is to get administration back to the bargaining table.
“The substantive monetary differences between WUFA and the administration are relatively small. If this administration has decided to return to collective bargaining, we could settle all this very quickly and avoid a lot of pain for students, faculty and the whole university community,” said union president Anne Forrest.
However, if a deal can’t be reached by Oct. 1, the union will execute a full work stoppage at a yet to be determined date.
University of Windsor president Alan Wildeman says if WUFA goes on strike, they're going to inconvience students.
"We’ve been very clear in our communications that were not going to continue to sit at the bargaining table, and bargain with ourselves, until such time there’s recognition that these are the fiscal realities we’re dealing with," he says.
On Aug. 14, nearly 200 WUFA members voted 80 per cent in favour of a strike.
Talks between the university and the union broke down late last month.
WUFA members have been without a contract since July 3.
