Smoke alarm not functioning in fatal Sandwich fire: officials

Windsor fire officials say a smoke alarm was not functioning in a fatal fire on Sandwich Street.

Firefighters were called to the 3000 block of Sandwich Street on Monday.

The occupant, a 71-year-old woman, died to the injuries sustained in the fire, Windsor police reported on Monday.

On Tuesday in a social media post, fire officials said that the smoke alarm outside of the sleeping area was not functioning.

The fire investigation has been completed by the Ontario Fire Marshal and Windsor fire.

Damages were estimated at $250,000.
