Windsor police say human remains have been found at the old Windsor jail.
Police say an archeologist was hired to look through the building.
The former jail was officially closed in November of 2014. When all the inmates left, Infrastructure Ontario took over the responsibility for the properties.
Ian McConachie, spokesperson for Infrastructure Ontario says the remains were unearthed in a known grave, in the jail yard. But he won't say what bones were found, nor will he identify the inmate they came from.
“Our research suggests these are the partial remains of an individual who was executed at the jail in the 1930's,” says McConachie.
McConachie says the fragments were left behind when an individual was interred in 1980
Local historian Terry Kennedy says he’s not surprised jail history is still being unearthed.
“Infastructure Ontario has been in and out of here, removing walls and garbage,” says Kennedy.
Kennedy said he even warned them of what else they might find.
“I called out to them, they should watch out, what they're doing, they could find my grandpa, or someone else’s,” he said.
Today, his prediction came true. Windsor police say an archeologist was brought in and found what they call "old bones". It’s not clear when they were found or where they were uncovered inside.
“It’s not a surprise considering the history of this place.”
Kennedy says life inside the jail was very different in the 1930s and 40s.
