A first-degree murder charge has been dropped against a man accused of killing a 19-year-old University of Windsor student in a downtown fight last October.
Dwayne Nicholas Pierce, 23, was charged in the fatal stabbing of Kevin Kugathasan. His defence lawyer Maria Carroccia told CTV News the “Crown determined there was no reasonable prospect of conviction.”
“His immediate reaction was that he was thankful that this ordeal was going to be over for him today,” says Carroccia.
Windsor police said six people were stabbed during a fight between two groups of men at University Avenue and Pelissier Street around 2 a.m. on Oct.19, 2013. Police believe as many as 12 people could have been involved in the melee.
Kugathasan, 19, was stabbed to death, say police. Five other people had non-life threatening injuries.
Four men, including Pierce, were originally charged in connection with the incident.
One of the men charged pleaded guilty to a reduced charge. Abdul Al-Bousaleh pleaded guilty to common assault in a Windsor court on Sept.22, 2014. He was originally charged with aggravated assault.
Ahmed Jaber was charged with assault and Ali Mahmoud Ahmed was charged with possession of a weapon.
